What is the cost difference between installing the Ipe decking tiles versus a traditional deck?

August 12th, 2011

Diamond Essence Ipe Door Mat

Since you can install the Diamond Essence products yourself, the difference in installation cost is huge. Installation cost can vary from region to region but it would not be unlikely that the homeowner could pay between $3.00 and $4.00 per sqft for installation on a standard deck that installs the traditional way. The average sqft of a deck would be around 400sqft so there is a cost savings of between $1200 and $1600 for installation costs if done by the homeowner and approx. 1/2 this cost if done by a qualified contractor as the time required to install this type of system is much, much less than standard deck boards. Also, if you compare the cost of building a hardwood deck the traditional way, the materials costs alone would be far higher. Typically, you can expect that a Diamond Essence deck tile installation will be less than half the cost of building a conventional hardwood deck. Diamond Essence Outdoor Flooring also offers more possibilities in terms of design, and can easily be taken up and reinstalled in another location if needed. If you are installing the tiles over an existing concrete patio or balcony consider the massive savings in time, cost and the backbreaking work of digging up and re-laying the concrete pad
The Diamond Essence Ipe decking tile can be purchased at Canadian Retail Stores or online at www.myocstore.com

Cutek Green Wood Preservative for wood decking.

May 26th, 2011

Cutek Green Wood Restoration

I tried this product on a pc of Pressure Treated Spruce and within a matter of minutes it had soaked entirely through the entire pc of wood. I have used several other wood preservatives and have never seen anything like this product. This product will seek out the water filled cells within the pc of wood and migrate to the cells and drive the moisture out. It does make sense when you think about it. If you have little or no moisture within a pc of wood the less likely you would get rot, twist and warp of your deck boards. I also like the fact that this product acts not only as a wood preservative but also seals and beautifies your deck. The Cutek Green comes in clear 5L containers and there are 18 different colors that are contained within packets and you simply pick your color and pour and stir into the clear Cutek. This product was formulated by a company in Australia called Chemisys Group where for many years they have developed effective stains and sealers for Australian species of wood that are subject to the extreme temperature conditions in that country. They are now bringing their product to the North American marketplace so decking contractors and homeowners will have available to them this really great product.

Otter Creek is the Canadian distributor and product can be purchased through them by calling 1-800-981-3590 or visiting their online store at www.myocstore.com

What product should I use to clean and restore my Ipe deck?

May 20th, 2011

Tigerwood Decking Brown Sugar Applied

Our company Otter Creek located in Ontario, Canada has a couple of product lines the work well when trying to restore or finish a Ipe, Tigerwood or Cumaru deck for the first time or restoring after several years. We have found good results in the Woodrich Hardwood Finishing Kit and the Cutek Green products. Both products have attributes that other stain and sealers don’t offer. The Woodrich product is formulated with natural pigments that are found in Ipe (Amaretto color formula) and with Tigerwood and Cumaru its the (Brown Sugar color formula). When applied because the stain is formulated to the natural pigments found in these tropical hardwood species it takes longer for the UV rays to break down the wood surface which in turn results in graying of the wood surface. Most homeowners and contractors are finding they only need to apply once every two years. The other big plus is the product will not peel and flake which is a very big issue when dealing with stain products for hardwoods.

The  Cutek Green works in a similar way but deeper penetration occurs with this product because it has a special wood preservative formula that migrates through the entire pc of wood (not just the surface) and provides additional stability to species such as tropical hardwoods and domestic species such a Pressure Treated Spruce, Pine, Fir and Western Red Cedar. The migration takes place within the living cells of the wood that contain water and drives the water out making the wood product more stable and protected against rot, twist and warping of your deck boards. Its available in 18 different stain colors and the colors come in packets that you mix into the clear product. Decking contractors like this product because it can be wet stacked which speeds up the installation time. Because the penetration rate is quicker than most products there is no worry of lap marks or brush stroke marks appearing from stopping and starting over a hour or days time.

Both of these products can be purchased at Otter Creek  by shopping online at www.myocstore.com or by calling 1-800-981-3590.

Cutek Green Wood Preservative before and after

Its now here and available from Otter Creek Forest Products. Cutek Green is like no other wood preservative on the marketplace. This product will give Canadian and U.S. Homeowners  something to smile about when used. Cutek Green has been used in Australia for many years treating large timbers to protect against twist and warp. This patented formula acts like no other wood preservative in the marketplace. Once applied the product migrates through the entire pc of wood from surface to core.  It seeks out water absorbed pours and extracts the moisture out of the pc of wood making the pc the wood much more stable and preserved at the same time. Decking contractors will also like the fact this product can be wet stacked and applied immediately to the deck surface. Imagine being able to treat your deck boards and being able to fasten the deck boards immediately to the deck surface without having to wait for the product to dry.  Another great feature of this product is it can be applied partially one day and finished the next day without fear of having overlap marks of worry of color variation. The spread rate of this product is 1,000-1400sqft per gallon. Cutek Green comes in 1 gallon sizes and larger if needed and comes clear with options of 18 different color tones that are formulated to enhance the natural character and beauty of the wood without obscuring the grain. This product is an excellent coating alternative for Western Red Cedar, Pine, Hemlock and tropical hardwoods like Ipe, Cumaru and Tigerwood. For further information or to purchase this product please contact Robert Abbott at toll free 1-800-981-3590 or you can purchase on their online store at www.myocstore.com

Titan Post Anchors Load Test Results August 20th 2010

September 12th, 2010
SUBJECT: Point Load Test Results on 4×4, 6×6 and 4×4 with Post Brace Anchors with regards to
Intertek Test Reports 3195819TOR-003 & 3195819TOR-003b

Intertek Testing Services (Intertek) has conducted point load testing on a series of products for Titan Building
Products (Titan). The products tested include 4×4 post anchors, 4×4 post anchors with a post brace, and 6×6
post anchors. Testing was conducted on three (3) samples of each type and the average maximum load
achieved is reported below.
Testing was carried out on a simulated deck platform using joists spaced 16” on centre, a blocking piece and
deck boards. A calibrated load cell was used in determining the maximum load achieved and was placed in-line
between the post and a hydraulic ram used to apply the load. The posts were installed according to the

manufacturer’s instructions. The load was applied at 42” above the deck surface to one face of the post.

The 4×4 post anchors achieved an average maximum load at failure of 337 lbs. The mode of failure for these

post anchors was the lag screws pulling out from the bottom of the wooden post. The 6×6 post anchors

achieved an average maximum load at failure of 503 lbs. The mode of failure for these post anchors was the

pan head screws pulling out from the deck boards. The 4×4 post anchors with post braces attached achieved an

average maximum load at failure of 499 lbs. The mode of failure for these post anchors was that the pan head

screws that attach the post anchor brace to the wooden post pulled out.

The Titan Post Anchors can be purchased at www.myocstore.com
