Traditional film-forming coatings vs CUTEK™

February 4th, 2012

Cutek Extreme Wood Preservative

Water is wood’s greatest enemy. Most paints and stains attempt to control water and water vapour movement in wood by forming a film surface that encapsulates the timber, aiming to keep water out.

In only a short time,

• UV and wear causes film breakdown which allows free entry of water and water vapour into the wood;

• heat causes water to turn to vapour which creates internal pressure;

• the film coating deteriorates more;

• free moisture exchange causes shrinkage and swelling, loss of dimensional stability, greater susceptibility to fungal and mould attack.

CUTEK™ however,

does not

 • -fuses through the wood controlling moisture from the inside;diencapsulate but

signicantly

slows down the rate of moisture exchange between wood and the environment;

stabilizes wood

by controlling moisture for many years, minimizing movement;

remains mobile

inside the wood and exhibits a ‘self-healing’ characteristic by migrating into cuts; • is not a film so

does not need to be removed

before recoating, greatly simplifying maintenance.

Surface Preparation when using Cutek Extreme Wood Preservative.

December 13th, 2011

Cutek Extreme Wood Preservative before and after

New wood, timbers and plywood

Ensure that substrate to be coated with CUTEKExtreme® is clean and dry When CUTEKExtreme® is used on plywood or laminated timber penetration beyond the glue line may be inhibited. Cutek Extreme  can be used on CCA and other treated timbers, however timbers pre-treated with invisible film-forming wax and polymer processes such as LOSP, or water-repellent dips may prevent or slow down the free diffusion of CUTEKExtreme®.

Old, or previously coated wood or timber

Old, dirty, or weathered grey surfaces should be prepared by first applying CUTEKProclean® restoration agent, and then power rinsing with a home pressure washer set to under 750 p.s.i. (50 bar), with a fan jet pattern to avoid damage to the wood fibres. This process can also remove tougher stains such as water marks, tannin stains, and grease stains. Once the timber or wood is thoroughly dry, the restoration of the surface may be completed by applying two coats of CUTEKExtreme®.

Please note that the use of high-pressure water alone to clean wood will not eliminate biological growth from the wood and may damage the wood fibres. The use of commercial and household cleaning solutions that contain bleaching agents such as sodium hypochlorite should be avoided. These chemical cleaners will harm the environment and may damage the timber tissue by producing a film forming reaction in the outer wood fibres that causes a subsequent coating failure. Wood previously coated with a film-forming product that is failing such as conventional stains, linseed oil, paint, polyurethane, etc., must first be restored to their original texture and color by preparation with a paint stripper and/or CUTEKProclean®. This process can be more complex depending on the individual circumstances, so consultation should be made with a CUTEK® dealer prior to the commencement of this type of project. The results that can be achieved from such a restoration are both dramatic and rewarding as warped and cupped wood can return to their original profile and flatness, and the original natural color and beauty of the wood can be restored.

 Cutek Extreme can be purchased in Canada by contacting Otter Creek at 1-800-981-3590 or by visiting the companies website www.myocstore.com

Cutek Green Weather and Temperature Application Instructions.

June 16th, 2011

Cutek Green Wood Preservative

Wood that is to be coated with Cutek Green should be clean and dry and ideally with a residual moisture content of no higher than 17%. Do not apply Cutek Green to exterior wood if its likely to rain within 24 hours of application.

Cold temperatures may increase the viscosity of Cutek Green, tending to slow down the rate of diffusion. Storing containers in a warm place immediately prior to application will help alleviate this problem. Because Cutek Green dries by diffusing into the wood substrate, application of a second coat of Cutek Green too quickly after the first coat in cold weather will significantly delay the penetration and drying of the finished coating. If this inadvertently occurs, remove the access Cutek Green from the surface with a rag will promote faster drying. Alternatively, the application of the second coat of Cutek Green may be delayed for up to three months in cold weather, with no detrimental effect to the effectiveness of the original coating.

Cutek Green can be purchased at www.myocstore.com

Cutek Green Wood Preservative for wood decking.

Cutek Green Wood Restoration

I tried this product on a pc of Pressure Treated Spruce and within a matter of minutes it had soaked entirely through the entire pc of wood. I have used several other wood preservatives and have never seen anything like this product. This product will seek out the water filled cells within the pc of wood and migrate to the cells and drive the moisture out. It does make sense when you think about it. If you have little or no moisture within a pc of wood the less likely you would get rot, twist and warp of your deck boards. I also like the fact that this product acts not only as a wood preservative but also seals and beautifies your deck. The Cutek Green comes in clear 5L containers and there are 18 different colors that are contained within packets and you simply pick your color and pour and stir into the clear Cutek. This product was formulated by a company in Australia called Chemisys Group where for many years they have developed effective stains and sealers for Australian species of wood that are subject to the extreme temperature conditions in that country. They are now bringing their product to the North American marketplace so decking contractors and homeowners will have available to them this really great product.

Otter Creek is the Canadian distributor and product can be purchased through them by calling 1-800-981-3590 or visiting their online store at www.myocstore.com
