I’m in the process of resurfacing my existing deck and wanted to leave the existing structure in place. I wanted to upgrade to a more modern surface but was unsure how I would choose a product that would best suite the look I was wanting to achieve as well as a product that could be installed without having to spend a lot of money in installation costs. I started by researching products on the Internet and came across several items I thought would be best suited for my project.

I knew I was wanting something in wood as I like the natural feel and look of wood but I also wanted something that was modern and durable. After many days of reseaching I came a across a product called Diamond Essence from Otter Creek. Its a Ipe flooring system that can go directly over existing decking and it comes in a tile format with different patterns. I had the company send me a few samples (which they sent to me for free) and I made a simple door mat to see if I would consider covering my entire deck with the product. I was very pleased with the outcome as the Ipe tiles were simple to install and went down on the surface very quickly as the tiles simply lock together.

The Ipe flooring tiles came in a box and they were prefinished so I did not have to worry about putting a finish coat on after they were installed. They also had finishing edges that framed my main tiles and gave a nice finished look. The Ipe tiles come in 12×12 and 12×24 sizes and they also have a tile that has a diamond shaped appearance cut out in the centre which provides an additional enhancement to the deck.

The Ipe tiles were not cheap (cost was around $12.00 per sqft) but I figured I had saved $3.00 or $4.00 per sqft if I had installed a traditional random board surface and the best thing I could install it myself. There were other companies selling a similar product but I liked the quality of the Ipe I received and the customer surface was exceptional. Ipe Decking Tile

Bellus Traba International S.R.L. warrants Diamond Essence Products to be free of defects in material and workmanship under normal use for a period of 10 years from the time of purchase. The product is warranted against defects in material and workmanship on all wood and plastic carriages.

Warranty is subject to normal household, commercial or patio usage, from the date of purchase. When making a claim under this warranty, the holder should contact the distributor (or retailer) from whom the purchase was made. Transportation to and from the Distributor (or retailer) is the sole responsibility of the distributor.

Special attention has been given to your new wood product to ensure lasting satisfaction and durability. Diamond Essence Products has protected each solid wood, with a coat of oil that contains a UV protector for exterior usage, however a coat of Woodrich Hardwood Wiping Stain or Cutek Green to preserve the exterior decking is required after installation, to ensure long lasting protection for the wood. Warranty is voided if the coat of oil after installation is not made.

• The term “defect” as it is used in this warranty is defined as a flaw or deficiency that may affect the use for which the product is intended.
• This warranty applies only under standard household and commercial conditions for use, and does not cover defects caused as a result of, neglect, deliberate damage, abuse, personal alterations, accidents, and maintenance that does not comply with the instructions which form part of this warranty.
• Only the original owner purchaser holds the right to a valid warranty.
• The warranty is valid only if the purchase is made from an authorized retailer for Diamond Essence Products. When making a claim under this warranty, the holder must contact the retailer from whom the purchase was originally made. Transportation to and from the retailer is the responsibility of the purchaser.

Exclusions:

Bellus Traba International S.R.L. warranties described above will not apply and Bellus Traba International S.R.L. will not in any way be liable in the event of:

A. Improper Installation: Performance of the Diamond Essence Products is dependent upon proper installation and following of the instructions sheet, which forms part of this warranty. This includes the oil required after installation, which needs to be made to maintain the warranty.

B. Improper Maintenance: Maintenance must be in strict accordance with the instructions and recommendations found in the Instruction Sheet.

C. Normal Environmental Conditions: Our products are warranted to perform in what we consider to be normal applications for exterior (or interior) decking. Not included in extreme environmental conditions.

D. Misuse: As well as we make our tiles, we cannot be expected to, and will not, assume responsibility for damage caused directly or indirectly by misuse, abuse, accident or use that is not consistent with our instruction sheet. Accordingly, no warranty is provided for any damage due to inadequate care or other factors including, without limitation, stains by chemicals not adequate for exterior decking, worn or narrow-heeled shoes (including heels that have 6mm of diameter or less), furniture or heavy equipment movement, damage caused by heavy items, by impact, scratches, or scarring caused by pets, abrasive, sharp or pointed items.

E. Alterations/Repairs: Alterations to any Diamond Essence Products product will void any and all express or implied warranties. No warranty is provided to cover repairs (unless and only to the extent performed under warranty by Bellus Traba International S.R.L.).

F. Reinstallation: In the event that Bellus Traba International S.R.L. is obligated, or elects, to replace or reinstall warranted tiles or wood slats, Bellus Traba International S.R.L. shall in no manner be obligated to provide for or incur the costs of removing or re-installing the defective tiles or resurfacing or refinishing the replaced or surrounding flooring or to provide for the cost thereof unless and to the extent expressly provided in the Warranty Description, above. No obligation to replace or repair shall extend to any sub floor materials, adhesives, supplies or other items consumed in the course of removal, installation or refinishing.

Ipe Outdoor Wood Flooring

Diamond Essence is a brand of outdoor wood flooring made from Ipe or what is referred to as Brazilian Walnut. It is  a very dense exotic hardwood with a beautiful olive- brown to blackish color. The species is naturally resistant to fire and has a Class A rating by the National Fire Protection Association and a Class 1 by the UBC (Uniform Building Code).

Moffatt & Powell Rona

Otter Creek is pleased to announce that Moffat & Powell Rona in London, Ontario is a new dealer for the Diamond Essence Ipe decking tile as of June 1st, 2011.

Moffatt & Powell Limited was a partnership formed in February 1956 by J. Keith Moffatt and Melvin Powell in the village of Watford. The core business was selling lumber, cement and coal. This trade had a sound footing established by Hiram Moffatt (Keith’s father) who had been operating the J.H. Moffatt enterprise at the same location since 1939. With a staff of four, including the two owners, the business flourished in small business quarters serving the farming and building communities in Lambton County and Sarnia.

In November 1960, a new showroom and warehouse facility was constructed at the present location, 494 Front Street in Watford. The Company continued to expand with the opening of a new and larger retail home centre and lumberyard on April 15, 1968, at 540 Albert Street in Strathroy. The successful operation of this Branch funded the third location on Hwy. 8-east of Mitchell, on November 1, 1973.

In January 1982, a merger was concluded between D.M. Powell Limited in Strathroy and Moffatt & Powell Limited. This increased the total number of stores to 5, with the Caradoc Street location in Strathroy and the anticipated opening of a branch at 1290 Trafalgar Street in London. Immediately after the merger, the Goderich and Exeter locations were acquired from the Conklin Home Centre Company.

David Powell purchased the shareholdings of Melvin Powell in Moffatt & Powell Limited and is today the partner of J. Keith Moffatt.

In March 1984, Moffatt & Powell Limited purchased the assets of the Harold Warwick Lumber Company at 126 Tillson Avenue, Tillsonburg. This gave the Company additional geographical coverage. With stores strategically located in and around London, the economic hub of southwestern Ontario, we are well situated to serve the needs of our contractor, farmer, commercial, and do-it-yourself (D.I.Y.) customer base.

The current Head Office and store location at 1282 Hyde Park Road was opened in 1996.

In 2006, Moffatt and Powell Limited celebrated their 50th anniversary, culminating with a two day event held at the Western Fair grounds. The first day was focused on trade professionals. On the second day, the traditional builder show was opened to the retail public for the first time, with great success. Hot Tub Brazilian Walnut Flooring Tiles

I have a hot tub in my home and I needed to cover up the existing floor with something that would look nice and be comfortable on the feet and most importantly take any water spills that would not damage the floor.  I came across the “Diamond Essence” Ipe decking tiles at www.myocstore.com and thought they would work well for my hot tub floor area. I contacted them and discussed the installation and cost and they assured me it would be the right material for this type of project. I ordered a sample and when I received I was convinced this was the right product. The wood was made of Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) and the underside had a hardened plastic that had exterior edges that allowed the wood tiles to lock together. I finished my project in a day and had a great looking floor when I was done. The water spills have not been an issue on the material and I can not believe how well the material looks and how solid it is. I compared their tile to some other competitors selling the same thing and the wood tile they sell is 1/8″ thicker. I’m very happy with the service I received and the material was exactly what they said it was and what it would provide.
