How to clean and brighten your weathered deck surface.

May 5th, 2011

Woodrich Wood Decking Stripper

I have a pressure treated deck that was several years old and it was starting to look drab due to the years of weathering it had. I did not want to replace the deck but thought I would like to attempt to strip it and re coat it to help make it look as new as possible. I was searching around the Internet and came across a product from Woodrich called EFC-38 which apparently works on all types of wood species such as pressure treated, cedar and even exotic hardwoods like Ipe, Cumaru and Tigerwood. This product is granular and you mix it in a 5 gallon pale of water and then you can apply with a power washer on low pressure and then spray it on and leave it for a few minutes and then spray it off. I was unsure how this product would work for my weathered deck that had never been cleaned so I also purchased the HD-80 which is a heavy duty stripper. I was advised to purchase along with this product the brightener which is to be applied after your stripper is used. This product is called Citralic ,Citralic is pH balanced to make the ideal neutralizer for HD-80 and other caustic strippers. I was very happy with the results I achieved with these products and would suggest you visit www.myocstore.com for further information.

Hardwood decking tiles make perfect addition to any patio or balcony.

Ipe Tiles for Decks and Balconies

I have a condo in Canada and its a very nice place with great views from our sixteenth floor location. In the mornings I like to sit outside and have my morning coffee and take a few minutes to relax before my busy day starts. I like everything on my balcony other than the cold and unappealing cement floor. It has a ruff texture that is not pleasing to my feet and most days its to cool to go barefoot on. I was looking for a product that would eliminate the cold and drab appearance and found the wood decking tiles at a store in Toronto. They were made of Ipe and the tiles came in a variety of sizes and patterns. The best thing was they were inter locking and each tile simply snapped into place. It took approximately half a day and I had my balcony surface completely covered with a beautiful looking wood surface that is very durable and maintenance free. If you would like to see where I purchased this product please visit www.myocstore.com

It was the best choice I could have made!

WoodRich Brand Hardwood Wiping Stain for a Red Cedar deck

September 10th, 2009

5WRWS1-2T

Customer Question…………

I have a red cedar deck. Would the Woodrich hardwood stain work on this
deck, or do you suggest something else. The deck is 4 years old and has had
Thompson’s sealing on twice.

Response from WoodRich……………….

The hardwood Wiping Stain Formula performs very well on Red Cedar and other “soft” woods.  The main consideration should be given to the spread rate or product coverage.  As Cedar is generally more porous than a hardwood such as Ipe, you actual coverage will be slightly less than what is advertised for Ipe.  On 4 year old Red cedar that has been protected with Thompsons Water Seal, I would anticipate a spread rate between 200 and 250 square feet per gallon.
The other consideration is product solids.  This formula is extremely high in both resin and pigment solids.  Care should be take not to over apply the product as this could result in shiny spots that remain tacky where the product was not able to soak fully into the wood.  To prevent over application, simply look back over the surface of the deck and wipe up any stain that is still on the surface a few minutes after application.
This product can be purchased at www.myocstore.com

Montana Ghostwood reclaimed wood that comes from new wood.

May 25th, 2009

ghostwood10Now I must say I have been an advocate of reclaimed wood for several years and in fact we stocked some in our yard in years past but it became a problem finding the old barns and other reclaimed materials that shipped cost effectively to our location. Not only shipping cost was a problem but finding qualified help and insurance was a big issue. To top things off the cost of the final product become so expensive due to the above factors and the waste that we incurred due to the reclaimed wood having knots, splits and other unusable defects we decided to discontinue the reclaimed wood altogether, until now!

A few months ago I was approached by a company called BitterRoot Valley Forest Products asking if I was interested in a reclaimed product from NEW WOOD, yes I said NEW WOOD. I listed to the gentleman speak for nearly an hour and was still very sceptical after we hung up.  At the end of the conversation he indicated he would be sending me samples to review and that once I seen these samples that I would become a believer of their product.

Well as the saying goes “the rest is history” when I received the samples I could not believe my eyes. Here was NEW WOOD looking like it was 200 years old and to much surprise it was virtually defect free. I called my contact back and asked how quickly I could become  a distributor. He explained that they were building a new website dedicated to “Ghostwood”, you heard me right “Ghostwood” and that my area was open for a distributor and that I should check bakc a few months later for the new website called www.mtghostwood.com .

Today is May 25th and is our first official day of becoming the distributor for this product and I wanted to share some information about the product on my blog so please take a few minutes and review the reasons why you should consider this product the next time your looking to purchase reclaimed wood for your next project.

Montana Ghost Wood is dedicated to use as much salvaged timber from the wild fires and beetle killed forest as possible. The Mountain Pine Beetle and forest fires kill living trees but do not harm the integrity of the wood. A large percentage of the company’s timber is salvaged from these standing dead trees. Due to the high altitudes, low humidity, and short growing season; these dead standing trees are some of the best timber around because its been dried naturally by Mother Nature.
Generally left to rot on the stump and go to waste, these trees are now being reclaimed and used in the companies “Montana Ghost Wood” product line. Reclaimed from the forests for their customers for generations to come. BitterRootValley Forest Products are proud to have partnered with fellow local mills, which purchase a large percentage of their timber from SFI (Sustainable Forest Initiative) certified mills.

For more information on ghostwood please visit our website at www.ottercreekforestproducts.com . We have samples and brochures that can be sent upon request.
