How do I calculate how much wire rope is required for the Vanguard Cable Kit

We get asked this question many times and its a good one to ask. The Vanguard Cable Kit requires our 5/32″, 316 grade, stainless steel wire rope. When you purchase the wire rope you need to consider how many runs of wire you want to put within the span of the vertical wood posts in a horizontal position that is satisfactory to your visual appearance. This option is up to the customer but we do recommend that you consider 8 runs of wire for a 36″ high rail and 9 runs for a 42″ high rail. Some customers only want 4 or 5 runs so its totally custom. What is a “run” a run is one wire rope running in a horizontal direction between two or more posts (what we call a span). When calculating the number of lineal feet of wire rope you will require you need to take the number of “runs” of wire and x it by the total number of lineal feet you have to cover. For example you have 100 feet of railing that required wire rope to be used as infill between the spans (distance between two or more posts) and you want 5 runs of wire you take the 5 runs x it by 100ft and that = 500ft of wire. We recommend that you order 10% more than what is required because when we send you the wire it comes uncut. You have to cut it on site so we ask that you order 10% more just in case you make a wrong measurement and you make a cut that is two short. I suggest when ordering your wire rope that you also purchase the RailEasy wire rope cutters which will make cutting the wire much easier and safer.
I hope this helps our customers better understand how to calculate the amount of wire for the Vanguard Cable Kit and is useful information. If you want to purchase the wire rope you can call our toll free number 1-866-940-5149 or visit www.stainless-steel-direct.com
