Ipe Decking Tile

The species Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) is much harder than White or Red Oak. It has exceptionally high bending strength qualities and maximum crushing strength. The Ipe deck tiles are very durable due to these natural characteristics of the species. The Diamond Essence decking tiles have a 10 year warranty and can be purchased through a number of Canadian or U.S. Retailers.

What product should I use to clean and restore my Ipe deck?

May 20th, 2011

Tigerwood Decking Brown Sugar Applied

Our company Otter Creek located in Ontario, Canada has a couple of product lines the work well when trying to restore or finish a Ipe, Tigerwood or Cumaru deck for the first time or restoring after several years. We have found good results in the Woodrich Hardwood Finishing Kit and the Cutek Green products. Both products have attributes that other stain and sealers don’t offer. The Woodrich product is formulated with natural pigments that are found in Ipe (Amaretto color formula) and with Tigerwood and Cumaru its the (Brown Sugar color formula). When applied because the stain is formulated to the natural pigments found in these tropical hardwood species it takes longer for the UV rays to break down the wood surface which in turn results in graying of the wood surface. Most homeowners and contractors are finding they only need to apply once every two years. The other big plus is the product will not peel and flake which is a very big issue when dealing with stain products for hardwoods.

The  Cutek Green works in a similar way but deeper penetration occurs with this product because it has a special wood preservative formula that migrates through the entire pc of wood (not just the surface) and provides additional stability to species such as tropical hardwoods and domestic species such a Pressure Treated Spruce, Pine, Fir and Western Red Cedar. The migration takes place within the living cells of the wood that contain water and drives the water out making the wood product more stable and protected against rot, twist and warping of your deck boards. Its available in 18 different stain colors and the colors come in packets that you mix into the clear product. Decking contractors like this product because it can be wet stacked which speeds up the installation time. Because the penetration rate is quicker than most products there is no worry of lap marks or brush stroke marks appearing from stopping and starting over a hour or days time.

Both of these products can be purchased at Otter Creek  by shopping online at www.myocstore.com or by calling 1-800-981-3590.

What finishing product should I use on my Ipe decking?

April 20th, 2011

Woodrich Hardwood Finishing Kit

Woodrich Hardwood Finishing Kit. I used it on my Ipe deck and I liked the results. If you buy the “kit” it provides you the cleaner, brightener and the finishing product. Most homeowners do not realize that their deck is dirty after supplier storage, transportation and construction of the deck and it needs to be cleaned and brightened before applying the finishing product. The cleaning and brightener product is granular and comes in 2lb and 10lb sizes. You simply mix the product in water and spray on and spray off. This gives the surface of your deck a new beginning and ready for the application of the Woodrich finishing product. This product is formulated to the natural color pigments of Ipe and thus lasts longer as it takes longer for the UV light to break down the surface of the Ipe. I also like the fact that it does not peel. I have tried numerous other products and I was always left with peeling issues.  The stain formula is called “Amaretto” and the product can be purchased at www.myocstore.com

My recommendation would be to use the

Patio Ipe Decking Tile in Canada

April 11th, 2011

I came across a great product that you can put around your concrete patio to make it look like a Ipe deck. This product is called Diamond Essence Ipe wood decking tile and the tiles lock together to make quick work of installation. The wood strips are made of Ipe which is a Brazilain Walnut and the tiles come in 12×24 and 12×12 sizes with matching moldings such as corner reducers and straight reducers. Brazilian Walnut comes mainly from South America and the manufacturer has created a unique fastening system that allows the tiles to snap together. The manufacturer calls it “Outdoor Wood Flooring” and I must say it’s beautiful and easy to install for the DIY. The tiles are mainly used on patios and balconies to cover up cold concrete surfaces and provide a tropical hardwood deck that is warm to the feet and much nicer to stand on with bare feet. How to keep a hardwood deck like Ipe looking new.

February 12th, 2011

Brazilian Walnut or a wood that is commonly called Ipe is being used more and more often as the species of choice when it comes to putting down a new deck surface. Ipe originates out of South America and is very dense and durable. Life spans of 25 years can be achieved and if you want to keep your investment looking as new as possible I suggest you try the Woodrich Hardwood Finishing Kit for Ipe. Woodrich has spent extensive time developing a finish that is applied to the Ipe deck surface once you have finished your project which provides a desired rich look of the natural beauty of Ipe once applied. Homeowners across Canada and the United States have been very happy with the results. The product normally lasts two years before having to be re applied unlike most finishes that only last a year or less. The most common comment homeowners has stated to us is they do not get any peeling with this product. Ipe is very dense and it takes longer for the finish to penetrate the surface so product application is used sparingly.
