DIY tips from customers on installing the Titan Post Anchor to a concrete surface

September 3rd, 2009

We used the titan 4×4 centering tool with our titan post project.  This
centering tool does not work with the 4 x 4 posts sold at Home Depot or
Lowe’s stores.  The actual measurements of their 4 x 4 posts are 3 3/8″ x 3
3/8″.

The centering tool appears to be designed for 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ 4×4 posts.

We do have some tips for future DIY newbies.
1. Drilling into concrete was new for us.  Using the anchor as a template
was difficult with a hammer drill operating so near to the hands of the
person holding the anchor.  We devised this method.  Setting the hammer
drill on rotary, we spun it for about 10 seconds at each hole to get a good
starting hole.  Then we turned the drill to rotary/hammer and drilled one
hole and attached the anchor with one concrete screw.  Then we went back and
drilled out the rest of the holes without having to have someone try to hold
the anchor in place.  We removed the concrete screw and continued with the
installation of the anchor to the post, and then the post and anchor to the
concrete.  We did notice that the concrete screw that was reset into the
previously drilled hole did not bite as well as the others.

2. Note that the shank on the on the bit of the hole arbor is 1/2″.  Be
prepared to rent, borrow, or purchase a 1/2″ drill.

3. Trying to line up the gaskets with the anchor holes was frustrating with
the post attached.  We put 10″ wooden skewers (like you use for cooking
shish ka bobs) in each hole, slipped the black gasket over the skewers, then
the white gaskets over the skewers, then the post and anchor over the
skewers–worked great.

We are pushing the envelope on these anchors and using them to install a 5′
lightweight fence on a concrete retaining wall.  We’ll let you know how it
turns out.  So far, so good! We seem to be getting the hang of it.
