Cutek Green Wood Preservative before and after

Woods such as cedar and some hardwood species are naturally durable and are therefore commonly used for wood exposed outdoors, such as weathered siding, shakes and shingles, decks, furniture, and fences. Durability is imparted by natural chemicals, which are contained in extractives in the heartwood of these species. Heartwood is the center part of the wood; the outer part is sapwood

Since only the heartwood contains extractives, wood that contains a high proportion of sapwood does not have the natural durability of wood that contains a high proportion of heartwood.

Wood is the material of choice for many structures. As with any building material, how wood is used depends on its properties, such as strength and stiffness, as well as its finishing characteristics and maintenance requirements. Problems such as poor finish performance, mildew, checking and splitting, and wood decay can be controlled with proper care and maintenance. Such problems can be avoided or attenuated through knowledge about the factors that affect wood, particularly wood exposed outdoors. If wood structures are given proper care initially and are maintained periodically, they can be functional and structurally sound, as well as aesthetically pleasing, for decades.

Properly seasoned wood that stays dry is not subject to decay, premature failure of paints and finishes, and problems associated with weathering, such as excessive splitting and checking, raised grain, extractive bleed, and discoloration. This is why you should be considering Cutek Green for application to any outdoor wood projects, either on new projects or restoring weathered wood projects.

How to preserve a hardwood deck in Canada

November 30th, 2010

When it comes to preserving your hardwood deck in Canada I would recommend trying the Woodrich Hardwood Wiping Stain. We have distributed this product for two years in Canada and our customers are very happy with the results.

The Woodrich Brand Wood Restoration and Preservation System involves 3 easy steps for keeping your wood deck, wood fence, wood siding or log home looking it’s best year round.

1.  Cleaning your wood to prepare it for refinishing.
2.  Brightening your wood to get it looking it’s best.
3.  Finishing your wood with a premium oil based stain and sealer.

Our goal is to make the entire process as simple and straightforward as it can be!

There are a few basic things everyone should know.  If you have a new deck, wood fence, wood siding, log cabin or garden deck it will need to be protected.  Because no exterior wood finish will last forever, we recommend a high quality oil based wood stain/sealer.

We also recommend that all exterior wood be cleaned and neutralized before applying any stain or sealer.  All wood finishes perform better when the surface is properly prepared.  Going through the cleaning and brightening steps will also remove things you might not see like mold and mildew spores or oily hand prints from handling the wood during construction.

Once you have applied your wood stain, simple maintenance will keep the finish looking good year round.  Keeping the pollen off is important.  Rinsing off the dust and dirt every now and then helps, especially on wood decks.  Refreshing the finish when it shows signs of wear or begins losing it’s luster will keep your wood looking great for years!
