Roof Top Ipe Decking Tile

Otter Creek a specialty building materials distributor located in Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada sells the Diamond Essence Ipe decking tile. This tile is made of Ipe a South American species called Brazilian Walnut.  There are other compeditors selling hardwood decking tiles but not the quality that these tiles offer. We are so confident in the quality of our decking tiles will replace any tile that breaks or cracks due to manufacturer’s warranty.

All tiles come pre- coated and ready to install but you will want to apply a new coating once every year or every two years to keep your tiles looking new. We sell two products Cutek Green and Woodrich Hardwood Formula. Both products are very good and will keep your tiles looking new for years to come.

What product should I use to clean and restore my Ipe deck?

Tigerwood Decking Brown Sugar Applied

Our company Otter Creek located in Ontario, Canada has a couple of product lines the work well when trying to restore or finish a Ipe, Tigerwood or Cumaru deck for the first time or restoring after several years. We have found good results in the Woodrich Hardwood Finishing Kit and the Cutek Green products. Both products have attributes that other stain and sealers don’t offer. The Woodrich product is formulated with natural pigments that are found in Ipe (Amaretto color formula) and with Tigerwood and Cumaru its the (Brown Sugar color formula). When applied because the stain is formulated to the natural pigments found in these tropical hardwood species it takes longer for the UV rays to break down the wood surface which in turn results in graying of the wood surface. Most homeowners and contractors are finding they only need to apply once every two years. The other big plus is the product will not peel and flake which is a very big issue when dealing with stain products for hardwoods.

The  Cutek Green works in a similar way but deeper penetration occurs with this product because it has a special wood preservative formula that migrates through the entire pc of wood (not just the surface) and provides additional stability to species such as tropical hardwoods and domestic species such a Pressure Treated Spruce, Pine, Fir and Western Red Cedar. The migration takes place within the living cells of the wood that contain water and drives the water out making the wood product more stable and protected against rot, twist and warping of your deck boards. Its available in 18 different stain colors and the colors come in packets that you mix into the clear product. Decking contractors like this product because it can be wet stacked which speeds up the installation time. Because the penetration rate is quicker than most products there is no worry of lap marks or brush stroke marks appearing from stopping and starting over a hour or days time.

Both of these products can be purchased at Otter Creek  by shopping online at www.myocstore.com or by calling 1-800-981-3590.

Tigerwood Bench with Brown Sugar Formula Applied

Otter Creek is a leading distributor of decking accessories in Canada. It carries a product from Woodrich that Canadian homeowners and contractors can apply to their hardwood decking such as Ipe, Cumaru and Tigerwood. The product is called “Hardwood Wiping Stain” and the colors are suited towards the natural color pigments found in Ipe, Cumaru and Tigerwood.  The Ipe formula is called “Amaretto” and when applied it enhances the natural color of Ipe. The other formula they carry is called “Brown Sugar” and when applied to Cumru or Tigerwood it enhances the natural color tone of these two species.  The product is  carried in 1 gallon and 5 gallon sizes.  Two gallons will do 500sqft of deck surface, four gallons will do 500-1000sqt of deck surface and five gallons will do 1000sqft to 1500sqft of deck surface. This product will normally last tow years between coats depending on the consumers preference to final appearance. If you apply each year it will provide a better appearance than if applied every other year. What is nice about this product is it will not peel or flake. Otter Creek  performed numerous longevity tests of the product prior to bringing the product on. Canadian government formally announcing the regulations for the Architectural Coatings segment (which includes wood coatings).

April 3rd, 2010

At the end of September, we received notice from the Canadian government formally announcing the regulations for the Architectural Coatings segment (which includes wood coatings).  Of interest to all of us (from paint dealers, factory applicators, to consumers), the VOC limit is set at 250 grams/liter.  This is the final regulation and is in force as of the date of the Gazette (30 September 2009).  The prohibition is based on the anniversary date of the regulation becoming in force.  In other words, all exterior wood stains which are over 250 gm/liter will be prohibited for sale/distribution on the 3rd anniversary day of the regulation.  For all paint resellers out there, this means that all wood coatings over 250 gm/liter VOC’s be illegal in September 2012.

Response……
In short, this regulation will not have an effect as all of our formulations are already below that threshold.
If you are asking me to comment on each highlighted item. . .
this means that all wood coatings over 250 gm/liter VOC’s be illegal in September 2012.
I can’t speak for Canada but the way it works in the US, this sort of statement is usually hyperbole.  It is not “illegal” it is simply regulated.  For example in California they have the same regulations.  I could still sell them a product that was 350 g/l, I would just have to pay an additional tax based on the amount of that material I sold into that district.  I would assume the same will be true in Canada.  In the US it pretty much comes down to two words “Ban” and “regulated” where “Ban” means it is virtually illegal to do unless you are “special” and “regulated” means the public would support the gov taxing you more for this activity.
25 grams/liter or less
Only our Timber Oil formulation can be made that low.  I assume they have a water based formulation.
8 standard colors or tinted from 1 base to achieve the 8 colors
We currently offer 4 standard colors and a clear base.  We can produce custom colors in batch sizes of 150 gallons or more.  Our stock colors can be mixed to produce an array of halftones.  All of our formulations can be tinted with any oil based tint system.  We recommend high quality micro-ground transparent oxide pigments to retain the highest clarity.
a superb replacement for Flood Seasonite
I am not familiar enough with the two products to comment
3 base tints formatted to match Flood bases and fully tintable from your current tint machine
We do not currently offer any products that would compete with opaque finishes.
Tintable to 8 colours from one base
We have formulations that will compete with this water reducible alkyd formulation but they have not been scheduled for release.  I don’t foresee a release date prior to completion of our new manufacturing facility later this year.
